Panoramic CCTV Camera: Cover a Whole Street With One

By Black Cats Group ·

One of our customers had a daily problem: someone was leaving or breaking a liquor bottle at his doorway every day, and he wanted to find out who. He asked whether CCTV could cover the whole street. The answer was a panoramic CCTV camera, and this is how it worked.

The two videos below show the installation.

Why one rotating camera was not enough

A 360-degree rotating camera sees only one direction at a time. If it looks one way, someone can walk the other way. To cover a whole street with ordinary cameras you would need several of them, and still have gaps.

What a panoramic CCTV camera is

A panoramic IP camera has two cameras inside one body. The camera stitches the two images together, using image-stitching technology, and shows them as one long picture. A normal camera shows a 16:9 picture; this one shows a 32:9 picture, which is twice as wide. That extra width is what covers the street from one end to the other.

Where we installed it

To see the street from its start to its end, we fixed the camera on a cantilever pole at the customer's terrace. From there the entire street fits in one view. Even three ordinary cameras would not have given the same complete picture, because the images from separate cameras do not join.

What you can see with it

  • who walks along the street;
  • which cars and bikes come, and whose house they go to;
  • where a vehicle stops and for how long.

With this, the customer could identify who was behind the bottles, and our team could show how the view matched the problem.

When to choose a panoramic CCTV camera

  1. You need to cover a long frontage, such as a street, a compound wall or a yard.
  2. You want one continuous recording instead of several that do not join.
  3. You can mount the camera at a point that sees the whole area, such as a terrace pole.

What to remember

Cameras that watch a street can capture people who are not your concern. Point the camera to protect your own property, keep recordings private and follow local rules. We install Stanklin, a Taiwan-based AI CCTV brand, and survey the site first to place a panoramic camera where it works. Our Neelankarai villa guide shows how cameras are planned around a larger property.

Key takeaways

  • A panoramic CCTV camera combines two cameras into one wide 32:9 picture.
  • Mounted well, one camera can cover a whole street.
  • Choose the mounting point carefully and respect privacy.
