Vacant House Security: Stop Wire and Tap Thieves

By Black Cats Group ·

Most owners think an empty house has nothing worth stealing. A real case from one of our customers shows why vacant house security deserves attention too: a house left empty after a tenant moved out was stripped almost completely, with no furniture taken at all.

This article explains what the thieves took, how they got in, and how a camera with an alarm changes the story.

What thieves take from an empty house

When we reached the house, we found that the thieves had pulled out nearly every metal fitting they could reach:

  • the electrical cables running inside the walls, including the thick cable laid for the air conditioner;
  • the wires for fans and lights, after breaking the bedroom door to reach them;
  • even the wire running into a beam about 12 feet above the floor;
  • every tap in the bathrooms, the wash basin and the kitchen sink.

Every switch box was empty. The likely motive was simple: copper and brass sell by weight at a scrap shop, so a house full of wiring and taps is quick money. Empty houses are attractive precisely because nobody is there to notice.

How they got in: the door nobody grilled

The front door and the back door were strong. The thieves came in through the balcony door, which had no grille. This is the pattern we see again and again: owners strengthen the doors they use every day and forget the one they rarely open.

For a vacant house, secure every opening, including balcony doors, terrace doors and ground-floor windows, with a grille or a solid lock.

How an AI CCTV camera helps a vacant house

A normal camera would have recorded the break-in and shown you the damage afterwards. An AI camera with a siren speaker changes the order of events. We install Stanklin, a Taiwan-based AI CCTV brand, with human detection and a loud external speaker. You mark the area to protect, such as the compound wall and the balcony. When a person crosses into it, the camera sounds the alarm and can play a voice message, such as "Who are you? What are you doing here?" The idea is to chase the thief away before the wires come out of the walls.

Alerts reach your phone, and you can talk through the speaker from wherever you are. Face detection also lists the faces of everyone who came, so you can see at a glance whether the house had visitors you did not expect.

A vacant house security checklist

  1. Fit grilles on balcony doors, terrace doors and windows.
  2. Put cameras on the compound wall or gate, the balcony and the back of the house.
  3. Choose cameras with human detection and a siren speaker, not just recording.
  4. Keep the power on and add backup, so the cameras keep working.
  5. Ask a neighbour or caretaker to check the house, and tell them who may enter.
  6. Do not announce on social media that the house is empty.

Good vacant house security is mostly about the entry points nobody uses, plus a camera that reacts instead of only recording.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth putting CCTV in an empty house?

Yes. Thieves target vacant houses for wiring, taps and fittings, and a camera with an alarm can scare them off before they do the damage.

Where should cameras go in a vacant house?

On the compound wall or gate, the back door, the balcony and the terrace, because these are the easy entry points.

Can I talk to someone through the camera?

Yes. A large speaker lets you speak from your phone, so you can challenge anyone on the property.

What if there is no power or internet in the house?

Vacant house security still needs both. Plan for backup power and a way to send alerts. Tell us the situation and we will design the setup.
