CCTV Camera Mounting Height: Why 10 Feet Works Best

By Black Cats Group ·

Many owners mount a camera as high as possible, thinking it will see everything. It is the first mistake in our "Top 30 CCTV Mistakes" series, and it is one of the most common. The right CCTV camera mounting height is lower than most people expect, and it makes the difference between a camera that shows a face and one that only shows the top of a head.

A camera has a job, not just a view

A camera exists to capture evidence: a face, a number plate, the actions of a person. Seeing a wide area is not the goal. If you mount a camera very high, it sees a lot of ground, but the faces are small and seen from above, and the footage may not identify anybody.

The right CCTV camera mounting height at the gate: 10 feet

To capture the face of a person who is approaching a gate, we mount the camera at about 10 feet height, with an angle of about 15 degrees downward. At that height and angle, the camera looks at the person almost face on, so features are clear and the number plate of a vehicle stays readable.

Why AI cameras are fussy about height

Modern AI cameras detect faces and people because they have been trained, using machine learning, on images taken at about 10 feet. If you fix such a camera at 15 feet or 20 feet, you are asking it to work in a situation it was not trained for, and face detection and human detection will not work correctly. This is why AI cameras should be placed where the manufacturer expects them.

What this means at each position

  1. Gate: about 10 feet high, centred, angled slightly down, with a 4K camera so that faces and plates stay clear when you zoom into playback. See our 4K gate camera guide.
  2. Main door: above the door, not opposite it, so it sees faces.
  3. Back door and sides: close enough to sense a person quickly and get a clear face; see our camera count guide.

How to avoid the mounting mistake

  • Do not pick the height just to be out of reach. Use a protective cage or a grille if tampering is a worry.
  • Ask your installer for the planned height and angle of every camera, written on the camera plan.
  • Ask for a test at the gate: someone walks in, and you look at the face in the live view.

Key takeaways

  • The best CCTV camera mounting height for a gate is about 10 feet at about a 15 degree angle.
  • AI cameras are trained at about 10 feet; mounting them at 15 or 20 feet breaks face and human detection.
  • Test the live view before you accept the installation, and check the CCTV camera mounting height on the plan.

Frequently asked questions

How high should a CCTV camera be mounted?

For capturing the faces of people who approach a gate, about 10 feet high at about a 15 degree angle works best.

Will a higher camera see more?

It will see more ground, but the faces will be small and seen from above, so it may not give you usable evidence.

Why does height affect AI detection?

AI cameras are trained at about 10 feet, so mounting them at 15 feet or 20 feet gives wrong results.
