Surveillance Hard Disk for CCTV vs a Refurbished Disk
When you install CCTV, you are not really buying cameras. You are buying recordings. You put the cameras up in the belief that tomorrow the footage will be there. That makes the hard disk in the recorder one of the most important parts, and it is where cheap quotes cut corners. Here is why we insist on a surveillance hard disk for CCTV.
What is a refurbished hard disk?
A refurbished disk is an old hard disk taken out of a discarded computer, repaired and sold again. In Tamil, we call this kind of repackaged item an "urutu" product. It may look like a normal hard disk, but it was never designed for a CCTV recorder, and it has already used up much of its life.
How a surveillance hard disk for CCTV differs
- Built for 24/7. A general-purpose disk is made for about 8 hours of work a day. A surveillance disk is made to run all day and night, year after year.
- Spin speed. A surveillance disk spins at 5400 rpm. A refurbished disk usually spins slower.
- Heat and power. A surveillance disk runs at low power and stays cool. A refurbished desktop disk can overheat within about 4 hours of being switched on, and when its temperature limit is reached it stops recording.
- Workload rating. Every disk has a limit to how much data it is meant to handle. A surveillance disk is rated far higher than a desktop disk, and a refurbished disk has often already passed its limit, so it can stop recording at any time.
Why recorder speed matters
A good camera sends 25 pictures per second. With 4 cameras, that is 100 pictures every second arriving at the disk. Think of sending 10 photos on WhatsApp and waiting for them to load. A disk that is not built for this struggles: video sticks, playback jumps and large parts of the recording are missing exactly when you need them.
What to ask before you buy
- Is this a refurbished disk or an original surveillance disk?
- How many years of warranty does it carry?
- How many days of recording will it hold for my cameras?
- Is it listed separately in the quotation?
Be wary of someone who offers a hard disk very cheaply. As we say in our video, we have used only surveillance-grade hard disks for the last 10 years, and have had no service call because of a hard disk problem.

Key takeaways
- You are buying the recording, so a surveillance hard disk for CCTV matters as much as the camera.
- Use an original surveillance-grade disk, not a refurbished desktop disk.
- Ask about the type, warranty and recording days in writing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use an ordinary desktop hard disk in a CCTV recorder?
It may work for a while, but it is not built for 24/7 recording and can overheat or stop recording.
How can I tell if a disk is refurbished?
Ask the seller directly, ask for the model and warranty, and buy from someone who lists it separately in the quote.
Why does my playback jump?
One possible cause is a disk that cannot keep up with the data from the cameras.
Do you fit surveillance-grade disks in your installations?
Yes. For the last 10 years we have used surveillance-grade disks only.
